Worldcon Weport
...via pictures! If you want to get right to the FULL SET of pictures, you can find them here on the FLICKR page. With captions. I make humorous observations. That is, iIf you think I'm humorous. A little?

A more text-oriented con report is at the end of the post. But for now...

Here are just a few selections from the full picture set:

Outside in the lobby of the convention center. Jenna Waterford, Jen Scholes, Adrienne Loska, Lisa Mantchev, and Elise Tobler. And yes, we planned it: From light hair to dark hair order.

Paul Melko, author of TEN SIGMAS, in the dealer room.

With Lisa Mantchev and Adrienne Loska. I'm the one without the corsett.

A couple of Talebones alums, James Van Pelt and Brian Hiebert, are visited by the mysterious ghost of another Talebones alum in the background. Jim seems to sense the presence....

Ken and Jen Scholes, James Van Pelt, and myself, at Bubba Gump's. Photo taken by Frank Wu.

The Calgarian Contingent at the Hugos.

Saturday night post-Hugos, I sat in the Hyatt bar with Randy McCharles, Val King and Brenda Cooper. Later we were joined by a boy and his editor: Jay Lake and Beth Meacham.

Who WERE these masked ladies, and what were they doing in the Hyatt bar like this? It wasn't until after I looked at the picture a little closer, that I realized this was a bachelorette party. The gal in the bright pink asked if I'd email it to her. Note (if you can see) the pink, um, "adornment" some of the ladies are wearing.

We're later joined by Jack Skillingstead and Nancy Kress.

Mary Robinette Kowal and her Campbell Award plaque and tiara. Of course I agree with what you're thinking: Lovely and radiant and deserving.

Jack Skillingstead dreams of having as much hair as Daryl Gregory and Chris Roberson

In the Hyatt bar...got a chance to talk quite a while with Jacob Weisman from Tachyon Books and Sheila Williams from Asimov's. I didn't know Jacob had been Shelila's intern a long time back!

In the dealer room I got a chance to pose with the lovely Kat Richardson. Buy her new book! It's called UNDERGROUND, and the 3rd in her series.

On my way out of the convention on Sunday I had one last chat with this fab crew: Daryl Gregory, Liz Argall, Diana Sherman, Andrew Tisbert, and Hugo-winning editor David Hartwell.

Okay, actually, my LAST chat was with Paul Melko, on the street, during the walk from the convention center to the Marriott, to catch a cab to the airport.

I had two panels, my first at a Worldcon! This was only my 3rd Worldcon. The first was Loscon in 1996, the weekend after Honna and I were married. The 2nd was in Philadelphia, 2001, when we had just found out Honna was pregnant with Orion.

Neither panel went quite the way I'd expected, but still turned out just fine. The Tales from the Slush Pile panel was not what I'd planned because...well, I left my folder of 12 years worth of fabulous cover letters and tidbits at home!! Dang. But Erin Evans of Wizards of the Coast had lots of great material, and I remembered enough to justify my being there.

Panel #2 was the Print-on-demand panel. Trends and all that. When I got there I realized it wouldn't be a panel, but a one-man show! Yikes. I hadn't planned on spending an hour fifteen minutes just by myself. But do it I did, and I think it went very well.

I had lunch one day with Jack Skillingstead, Nancy Kress, Daryl Gregory, and John Picacio. Lunch with the Scholes' and Jim Van Pelt, and I saw old friends and made new acquaintances. I roomed with the fab roomies Scott Magner and Adrienne Loska. I'll admit: they stayed out a lot longer than I did each night! You crazy party animals!

I spent a good chunk of time with Mark Rich, and was able to show him the cover for ACROSS THE SKY, his Fairwood collection. I went to a few panels with Randy McCharles (WFC 08 chairman), and...well shoot, there are just too many people to mention here. If you're reading this, and we chatted, leave me a comment here! It will be like continuing the conversations we had.

And if you all see comments piling up under here, come on in and read if you've got the time. I will possibly put more tidbits about Worldcon in the comments.  Don't forget to check out all the pics on Flickr!

How come whenever ANYONE posts pictures of her it's always "the lovely Kat Richardson". Even I do it!

It was so good to see you, Patrick. I wish we'd had time to catch up.

Good to see you too! There's never enough time, is there? Especially at such a big con. And especially when a rising star is zooming into the SF cosmos! :)

Oh hush.

Oh, Patrick, these are wonderful! I like them all, but my favorite is the one with you, Lisa, and Adrienne.

Lisa must be wearing six inch heels! And I love Adrienne's hat. What a great picture. Can you email me a copy? Next time, I think you should dress up as a pirate!

Because I'm an ass, I think Mary Robinette Kowal would look great with a pink "adornment." The tiara does her proud, though.
